Its All in the Nozzle ~ Cotton Grower

"It's All in the Nozzle," Al Fava, Spray Technology, June 1998

A main objective of Jay Hardwick's spray operation is getting the right amount of material delivered to the right place. TurboDrop Venturi nozzles from Greenleaf Technologies helps him achieve this goal. TurboDrop nozzles produce large, air-filled drops that provide excellent canopy penetration and reduce drift. Upon impact with the target weed or cotton leaf, the drops shatter into very small droplets that disperse along the target area for better coverage. "I can get anywhere from 20% to 50% better coverage with these nozzles," says Hardwick.

Mounted on each spray boom is a three-way manifold with three slots for tips. Each TurboDrop nozzle is designed for certain gallons-per-acre use rates. As Hardwick's spray rig drivers move from one crop to another or from one job to another, they just flip the manifold on the boom to change the nozzle size to fit the requirements of the next job. "This system saves lots of time compared to the old system of changing the nozzles and cleaning the screens each time you went into another spray job," says Hardwick.

"The TurboDrop nozzle bodies enable you to get these materials into the canopy better than a flat fan or flood tip," he says. "Your savings mount up in the way you apply the material. I have a delivery system that gets material where it needs to be better than anything else available to me, and that's where I start seeing the cost savings build up."
